Second opinions

IT Second Opinions & Proposal Reviews

A significant technology recommendation shouldn't require you to make a decision based solely on information from the company selling or implementing the solution.

North Sound provides an independent review of proposed technology purchases, infrastructure upgrades, and IT service arrangements.

When this may be useful

  • Your IT provider recommends an expensive upgrade.
  • You're comparing competing technology proposals.
  • You're considering changing managed IT providers.
  • You want to understand the costs and risks of a proposed infrastructure change.
  • You want an independent perspective before approving a significant technology purchase.

What the engagement may involve

  • Reviewing the proposed solution and associated costs.
  • Discussing the underlying business requirements.
  • Examining the technical reasoning behind the proposal.
  • Identifying alternatives worth considering.
  • Reviewing relevant operational and maintenance implications.

What you receive: depending on the agreed scope, a concise written assessment, a discussion of the principal findings, and practical questions or recommendations to help inform your decision.

Business Technology Assessments

Technology environments often evolve gradually. Over time, businesses may accumulate systems, software, subscriptions, and vendor relationships without a clear picture of how everything fits together.

A focused assessment can help identify important risks, unnecessary complexity, and opportunities for improvement.

When this may be useful

  • You're unsure whether existing systems meet current needs.
  • You're reviewing technology spending.
  • You're concerned about backup and recovery arrangements.
  • You're considering a major technology change.
  • You want to identify priorities before approving new projects.

What the engagement may involve

A scoped review of selected areas such as:

  • Network infrastructure
  • Cloud services
  • Technology spending
  • Backup and recovery
  • Information security practices
  • Vendor relationships
  • Business continuity considerations

What you receive: depending on scope, a summary of findings, identified risks, and a prioritized set of practical recommendations.

This is not a comprehensive cybersecurity audit, penetration test, or compliance certification.

Planning

Technology Planning & Vendor Advisory

A successful technology project begins with understanding what the business actually needs. North Sound helps business owners define requirements, evaluate alternative approaches, and plan changes before committing to a particular vendor or implementation.

When this may be useful

  • Selecting a new IT provider.
  • Planning an infrastructure upgrade.
  • Evaluating cloud or business software options.
  • Preparing for a technology migration.
  • Establishing requirements for a significant project.

What the engagement may involve

  • Clarifying business requirements.
  • Evaluating technical alternatives.
  • Reviewing vendor proposals.
  • Identifying implementation considerations.
  • Developing a practical project plan.
  • Participating in agreed-upon project review milestones.

What you receive: depending on scope, a requirements summary, comparison of available approaches, project recommendations, or another agreed-upon planning deliverable.

North Sound does not become responsible for the later implementation or ongoing operation of the technology unless a separate arrangement says so.

Occasional

Selected Technical Projects

North Sound occasionally accepts narrowly defined technical projects involving network architecture, infrastructure, security configuration, cloud services, and complex technical troubleshooting.

These projects are considered individually based on scope, availability, and the arrangements for ongoing support. For business-critical systems, an appropriate provider should be available to maintain and support the solution after the engagement concludes.

Boundaries

How the Practice Works

Scheduled and scoped

Engagements are scheduled and individually scoped. Work is performed primarily remotely.

Agreed before work begins

Fees and deliverables are agreed upon before work begins.

Not a help desk

The practice does not provide emergency IT support, continuous monitoring, or general help desk services.

Ongoing support stays with your provider

Ongoing responsibility for business-critical technology remains with the client's designated support provider unless a separate arrangement explicitly establishes otherwise.
